Washington-Baltimore News Guild

Washington, DC

This is the 2025 fellowship description for this mentor organization.

The Washington-Baltimore News Guild (WBNG) is the union for more than 3,000 news, information, nonprofit and labor-organization workers in the mid-Atlantic and beyond. We are one of the largest locals of The NewsGuild International Union (TNG) -- the largest union of communications employees in North America -- and one of the sectors of the Communications Workers of America. Our units include The Washington Post, Bloomberg, the Southern Poverty Law Center, the area local union staff of the SEIU, and many, many others. We represent the employees of Jeff Bezos and the AFL-CIO.

We are seeking a summer fellow to work under the direct supervision of WBNG’s General Counsel. Our Local, with a diverse group of more than 60 units, is a litigious one, with multiple disputes in arbitration, before the National Labor Relations Board, and in federal courts. The law fellow can expect to conduct research and writing on a wide range of labor and employment law topics, assist with arbitrations and hearings before the NLRB, and attend grievance meetings and legal proceedings if possible. The position requires strong interest in labor law and excellent research and writing skills. Second- and third-year students preferred, but first year students with a strong background will be considered.

Salary will be of $7,000 total and consistent with the rules of the Peggy Browning Fund and applicable laws. Start and end dates are negotiable but would generally run from early June through mid-August. The position is remote but may involve visits to WBNG’s headquarters in Washington, DC, as required/permitted.

In addition to the basic application requirements (cover letter, application form, essays, resume), applicants for this fellowship must also include a law school transcript and a writing sample.
