Katz, Friedman, Eisenstein, Johnson, Bareck & Bertuca w/ Chicago News Guild
Chicago, IL
This is the 2025 fellowship description for this mentor organization.
Since the firm’s founding in 1954, Katz, Friedman, Eisenstein, Johnson, Bareck & Bertuca has been an industry leader in the areas of Labor & Employment law, as well as Illinois Workers Compensation, Personal Injury, and Social Security Disability. The firm’s Labor & Employment attorneys serve as outside counsel to a number of different labor unions throughout the Midwest, and also represent individual employees whose rights have been violated by their employers in non-unionized settings. Our union clients represent employees in a variety of industries including, but not limited to, auto manufacturing, oil refining, nursing, education, broadcast television and news production, postal workers and warehouse workers.
As an AV-rated law firm, our experienced attorneys have established a reputation in the Chicago-land area and throughout Illinois as the most knowledgeable and ethical attorneys among our peers in all of our practice areas. The firm has been repeatedly rated each year by U.S. News and World Report as a “Best Law Firm” in the areas of union/employee side Labor & Employment and employee-side Workers’ Compensation, and several of our attorneys have been individually and repeatedly recognized as “Illinois Super Lawyers” and “Best Lawyers in America” in their respective practice areas. When you choose Katz, Friedman, you can rest assured that you are represented by one of the most highly rated and well-respected law firms.
The firm is seeking a Peggy Browning Fund intern for our Labor & Employment department for the Summer, 2025. The intern would be expected to use their legal skills to assist our labor and employment lawyers in all aspects of client representation, including, but not limited to conducting legal research, writing briefs, motions and legal memoranda, reviewing documents and assisting with discovery, assisting with labor arbitration matters, NLRB and EEOC charges, and general advice and counselling for our union clients. The intern will also likely be asked to provide similar assistance to our workers’ compensation and personal injuries attorneys as needed throughout the summer, which should provide the intern with a great opportunity to gain valuable experience in a variety of practice areas. We ask that our interns typically work in our office, as they work collaboratively with the supervising attorney(s), but some hybrid/remote work will be available.
The firm will provide a total stipend for the ten-week fellowship of $21/hour, with the expectation of approximately 20-30 hours per week, depending on the workload in any given week. To make this fellowship full-time, per PBF guidelines, the student selected will have the opportunity to work 20-10 hours a week for the Chicago News Guild.
The Chicago News Guild is a labor union dedicated to protecting the rights of professional employees in the Chicago metropolitan area. The Guild has represented reporters, editors, photographers and other newspaper and digital media employees for over sixty years. CNG also represents court interpreters and staff at not for profit organizations and other unions. The fellow can be expected to participate in organizing and representation work with the Guild. More details to be provided by PBF when selected.
