United Food and Commercial Workers International Union

Washington, DC

This is the 2025 fellowship description for this mentor organization.

As the largest private sector labor union in North America, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) represents more than 1.3 million workers in the United States and Canada. Our members work primarily in retail food stores; food packinghouses and processing plants; department and drug stores; chemical facilities; and in the distillery and cannabis locations.

Peggy Browning Fellows work closely with in-house attorneys to produce legal research and writing on important worker issues, involving labor, employment, civil rights, and other laws impacting worker and union advocacy.   Fellows’ legal work supports active organizing campaigns, collective bargaining objectives, and federal and state legislative advocacy.  Fellows also assist in advising decision-makers, including officers and staff for both the International Union and affiliated local unions. We involve Fellows in discussions with attorneys and union staff so that Fellows may understand how their work fits into the UFCW’s wider mission, and how unions develop strategies for organizing workers and advancing worker interests.

During the summer, attorneys work closely with Fellows to ensure they come away with a solid understanding of union-side labor law, the real-world issues workers face, and improved written advocacy.

Fellows will have opportunities to network with law clerks at other labor unions through AFL-CIO programs. We encourage Fellows to attend workshops, lectures or similar programs relating to labor and employment advocacy.

The total ten-week stipend for this fellowship will be $10,000. If fellows desire to work more than ten weeks, they will be paid $1,000 for each additional week.

Fellows work in-person at our office located at 1775 K St. NW, Washington, D.C.
