Segal Roitman LLP

Boston, MA

This is the 2024 fellowship description for this mentor organization. This position has been filled.

Segal Roitman, LLP is New England’s oldest and largest law firm exclusively representing labor unions, employees, and employee benefit funds. We handle a broad range of labor and employment matters, including advising labor unions and employees, litigating cases in the courts and in arbitration, negotiating contracts, counseling employee benefit funds, and assisting injured workers. For over 50 years, Segal Roitman, LLP, through its attorneys, has worked diligently to promote economic justice and equitable labor-management relations.

The Peggy Browning Fellow will work on the full continuum of our union-side labor, employment, and employee benefits practices.  This may include labor litigation at the NLRB and Massachusetts Department of Labor Relations, as well as wage and hour, discrimination, and employee benefits cases before administrative agencies and state and federal court, and advice work in all practices.

Excellent research and writing skills and a commitment to protecting the rights of workers are required.  Additionally, this fellowship position is limited to 2L applicants who have demonstrated interest in labor law, ERISA, plaintiff-side employment law, and/or related subjects through law school coursework, research, and/or prior work experience.

The Fellow will principally perform research and writing, assigned and supervised by the firm's attorneys. In addition, the Fellow may be tasked with special projects from time to time, e.g., interviewing witnesses, working with attorneys on case preparation, as assigned. Finally, the Fellow will be given opportunities to attend hearings, arbitrations, and "out of the office" meetings.

The Fellow may have opportunities to attend programs/CLEs that we make available to associates from time to time.

Throughout the pandemic, the safety of all our attorneys and staff - and their families - has been our first priority. This has meant that all attorneys - including PBF clerks - have to some extent worked from home, and Segal Roitman has maintained and continues to maintain stringent protocols for the increasing circumstances in which attorneys and staff need to work at our offices. We will continue to carefully monitor the safety of our employees and will adjust protocols as needed, as in-person work becomes more frequent.

In terms of PBF job duties and opportunities, those remain the same as described above, only some may be done remotely. Peggy Browning Fellows will have an opportunity to attend hearings, arbitrations, negotiations, preparation sessions, and other meetings in person or on remote platforms such as Zoom, as well as participating in internal Segal Roitman meetings. Research and writing will continue, as per usual, with the exception that check-ins with Segal Roitman attorneys may occur via Zoom and telephone.

Excellent research and writing skills and a commitment to protecting the rights of workers are required. This fellowship position is limited to 2L applicants who have demonstrated interest in labor law, ERISA, plaintiff-side employment law, and/or related subjects through law school coursework, research, and/or prior work experience.

In addition to the basic application requirements (cover letter, application form, essays, resume), applicants for this fellowship must also include a brief legal writing sample (no more than 6 pages).

The stipend for this fellowship will be $800/week. Summer students at this firm typically work 40 hours/week.
