O'Donoghue & O'Donoghue LLP is one of the oldest and largest union-side labor law firms in the United States, with approximately 30 attorneys engaged in the representation of labor unions and employee benefit plans. Since its founding in 1935, the firm has served as counsel for a wide array of international and local labor unions as well as union-sponsored employee benefit plans.

For instance, the firm has long served as general counsel for three international building trades unions and a department of the AFL-CIO. In addition, the firm has served as counsel for a variety of other unions, including those representing insulators, broadcast technicians, communications workers, electrical workers, emergency medical technicians, federal government employees, ironworkers, judges, letter carriers, machinists, pilots, pressmen, stagehands, teachers, teamsters and others.

During the 1950s, the Firm helped to establish some of the first jointly-administered employee benefit plans in the construction and printing industries. In the years to follow, the firm's employee benefits practice has grown extensively to include the representation of national, regional and local employee benefit plans in a wide range of unionized industries.

O'Donoghue has also been at the forefront of developing progressive legislation - at the federal, state and local level - to assist labor organizations and employee benefit plans.

Although the firm is old, O’Donoghue’s attorney base is young on the whole and includes many PBF alums. PBF Fellows can expect to receive substantive research and writing focused assignments throughout the summer with a great deal of attorney interaction.  Previous Fellows have worked on research and client memoranda, benefit plan documents, and briefing papers, as well as pleadings, motions and other documents for judicial and administrative proceedings. The Fellow will gain exposure to a wide range of legal and policy issues in the fields of labor law and employee benefits law (ERISA).

We prefer second-year students who have experience in the areas of labor law and/or employee benefits law or who demonstrate a strong interest in these areas.

The stipend for this ten-week fellowship will be $1,600 per week (i.e., $16,000 in total for the 10-week period).

The Fellow would work from our Washington, DC office, where social events are held weekly during the summer for all law clerks and attorneys. The Fellow would also be encouraged to participate in networking opportunities and organized events offered by the AFL-CIO and other labor organizations.
