United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE)

Pittsburgh, PA

This is the 2025 fellowship description for this mentor organization.

The United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE) is a democratic national union representing private and public sector workers throughout the United States. The UE is one of the original CIO unions and has maintained its progressive, rank and file stance since it was founded in the 1930s. The National Union's Legal Department provides advice and legal support to the UE's national officers, field staff and locals.

Depending on the interests and skills of the Fellow, they will do legal research, write memos, position statements and briefs on a broad range of private and public sector labor issues, prepare materials for proceedings before arbitrators, federal courts, state employee relations boards and the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), and assist in preparing staff training materials on immigrant workers rights, the rights of strikers, workers' rights in the face of changing NLRB precedent, and related issues. Among other things, recent Peggy Browning Fellows have written appellate briefs, helped prepare witnesses for arbitration and NLRB representation hearings, and worked with the UE's North Carolina International Workers' Justice Project, which involves using international and domestic law to challenge state law prohibiting collective bargaining for public sector workers there.

The UE Legal Department is a small, fast-paced environment with an excellent labor and employment law library and access to Westlaw and Bloomberg Law. The Fellow will be directly supervised by the General Counsel and will work closely with the Staff Attorney. They will have the opportunity to participate in staff meetings, training, and other union-sponsored events such as rallies or marches. Fellows are paid on a semi-monthly basis.

The total ten-week stipend for this fellowship will be $7,000.
