On June 24, the Peggy Browning Fund recognized James Boland, President of the Bricklayers Union, and Nancy Schiffer, retired Associate General Counsel of the AFL-CIO for their achievements on behalf of workers and their families. Guests from across the country came to pay homage to both awardees for differing reasons.
On June 24, the Peggy Browning Fund recognized James Boland, President of the Bricklayers Union, and Nancy Schiffer, retired Associate General Counsel of the AFL-CIO for their achievements on behalf of workers and their families. Guests from across the country came to pay homage to both awardees for differing reasons. Those from BAC, the Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers, spoke of Mr. Boland's extraordinary leadership. Others who have worked with Nancy Schiffer at the United Mine Workers and the AFL-CIO, including former AFL-CIO Union Summer participants and Peggy Browning Fellows arrived to express their gratitude for her help in shaping their careers.
Elizabeth Bunn, Director of Organizing, AFL-CIO, introduced Nancy and spoke of her commitment to all the law students who participated in their program. Henry Kramer, Secretary Treasurer for BAC, introduced Mr. Boland and the many union officers and members in attendance.
Art Traynor, III, a 2006 Peggy Browning Fund Fellow, spoke about his Summer Fellowship experience and his relationship with Nancy Schiffer as a student who participated in both the AFL-CIO Union Summer Program and the Peggy Browning Fund Summer Fellowship. He shared his views on the value of these programs in helping law students to decide their career path.
The Peggy Browning Award was presented to both in the Gompers Room of the AFL-CIO by Peggy Browning Fund Board Chair Dennis Walsh, Esq. who is Director of Region 4 of the NLRB.
