IUE-CWA Summer Fellowship Experience
Monday, July 29th, 2013
Peggy Browning Fellows Ian Seruelo and McLean Johnson at the IUE-CWA in Dayton, Ohio attended a training sponsored by the UFCW on OUR Walmart (Organizing United for Respect at Walmart) and the Summer for Respect Campaigns.
(R to L) PBF Fellows Ian Seruelo and McLean Johnson with supervising attorney Lela Klein visited the DuraMax manufacturing plant in Dayton, Ohio. The plant manufactures and assembles diesel engines for different light and medium-duty GM and Chevy trucks. The workers union in DuraMax is part of IUE-CWA Local 775. The tour of the plant was arranged to expose the Fellows to the workplace and the conditions where IUE-CWA members work.
The training started with the sharing of the history, stories of mobilizations and gains of past efforts and then focused on the bigger challenges of bolstering the organizing efforts and strengthening the movement. More than 30 union leaders and organizers, mostly from different locals of the UFCW participated in the two-day activity held at UFCW Local 75 headquarters in Dayton, Ohio.
